Getnet graduated from Addis Ababa University (AAU) in 1990 with a BA in Sociology and Social Administration with cum laude honors. He received MSc degree in Health Social Science from the University of Newcastle, Australia and PhD in medical sociology/anthropology from the University of Amsterdam. He is now a full professor in the Department of Sociology of AAU. He is a honorary professor at Jimma University, Adjunct Professor at Bahirdar University and a Global Fellow at the Centre on Law and Social Transformation, University of Bergen, Norway. He is also community mobilizer/development agent and a member of Ethiopian parliament.
He co-edited two books and published a book and over 70 journal articles and book chapters. He has received a number of prestigious academic grants and fellowships including Fulbright scholarship and NIH grant from US, Ford Foundation scholarship, Erasmus Mundus scholar scholarship in International Health, Erskine Fellowship at the Centre for Health Sciences from University of Canterbury, New Zealand and travelled over 100 times (outside of Ethiopia) for conferences , workshops, teaching, research and PhD or Masters level examination in Africa, Europe, Asia, North and South America. He has also taught and/or researched in Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, Netherlands, UK, US, Australia, New Zealand and Norway. He is Fellow of Ethiopian Academy of Sciences, past President and current board member of Ethiopian Society of Sociologists, Social workers and Anthropologists (ESSSWA), Deputy chair of Board of Governors of Wolkite University. He is also a member of Parliament Standing Committee for Health, Social Development, Culture and Sport Affairs, and vice chair of the Parliamentary Friendship Committee to EU and Western Europe.
He is also a member of the NIHR’s Global Health Policy and Systems Research (HPSR) Funding Committee and review grant proposals for Norwegian Partnership program for Global Academic Cooperation (NORPART), Medical Research Council, UK, Science for Africa Foundation, Addis Ababa University and others. He is a member of the External Advisory Group of the multi-country study focusing on developing evidence-based approaches to responding to the needs of people who are homeless and have severe mental illness (HOPE) . He is currently leading as the PI for Ethiopia on the project entitled: Social Sciences for Severe Stigmatizing Skin Conditions (S5 Foundation) in Ethiopia, Sudan and Rwanda, Five year project (2019-24) £4 million grant supported by the National Institute for Health Research, UK and in charge of many other academic grants from Norway and US, Canda and other countries
Received Distinguished Research Award and Outstanding scholarly achievement award (from AAU in 2016 and 2023 respectively), Higher Honor Laureate from Abyssinia Award (2019), Good Person of the year from Yebegosew Award (2021) and the National Leadership Award ( from the University of Newcastle, Australia, 2023) for his contribution to social science research. For his exceptional community service, he is the winner of the 2016 Exemplary Community Service Award from P2P USA. Moreover, Azena community, Distrcit (Woreda) and Zonal officials named one junior elementary school and a high school after him and received dozens of recognition certificates from Woreda, Zonal and Regional Governments. He also received Yusuf Badri Civic Engagement International Prize from Ahfad University for Women in Sudan.
