With a background in medicine and International Health Dr.Ameyo has, for close to 15 years, utilized his clinical and management skills in conceptualizing and addressing the various health needs peculiar to the second largest county in Kenya, Turkana. At the national level, besides being a member of MOH Viral Hepatitis and STIs TWG, he has contributed towards development of the first national policy on blood transfusion and organ transplant, as well as the first report on the Confidential Enquiry into Maternal Mortality in Kenya. Since 2012, he has volunteered with the Geneva Foundation for Medical Education and Research(GFMER), a WHO collaborating center in training in reproductive health and research, during which period he has peer-reviewed scientific papers, and co-authored open-access training modules jointly with GFMER, Harvard’s Maternal Health Task Force, and Oxford Maternal and Perinatal Health Institute. With interest in space science, the National Aeronautical and Space Administration (NASA) nominated him beginning September 2018 to 2020, as the Kenya country coordinator in their global annual ‘Scientist for a Day’ program, which endeavors to nurture scientific thinking in young minds. He’s a previous awardee of the Young Voices in Research Prize jointly conferred by The Lancet, Global Symposium on Health Systems Research and the Global Forum for Health Research. He’s interested in the bioethical issues around the use of emerging technologies such as gene editing as with CRISPR Cas and artificial intelligence in the context of emerging and re-emerging global health challenges, from a global governance perspective.
