Sofia Salas

I am a medical doctor and, as of 1994, I have been member of different research ethics committees (REC), at Santiago, Chile. Since 2023, I am the Director of WHO/PAHO Collaborating Centre for Bioethics at Universidad del Desarrollo; one of the aims of this Centre is to develop network capabilities with other Collaborating Centers and experts in Research Ethics, Biolaw and Bioethics teaching. In my position of Full Professor of Medicine at the Centre for Bioethics, School of Medicine, ClĂnica Alemana Universidad del Desarrollo I teach research ethics at pre and postgraduate levels and conduct bioethics research in different topics. I am a member of the Faculty of Medicine REC and of the Department of Ethics of the Chilean Medical Association (since 2012). During two consecutive periods I was a member of the Advisory Committee on Research Ethics for the Chilean Ministry of Health (2014-2022), where I contributed to develop research ethics capacity at a national level. In the year 2014, I was awarded with a training Program in Research Ethics at FLACSO, Argentine, a program supported by Fogarty International Center from the NIH, where I was able to have an in-depth training on research ethics. Thanks to the collaboration with international groups that I have met mainly during my attendance to past GFBR Meetings, I am developing research on different bioethical issues and continue to contribute to different international groups.
