Theme 2: Rethinking Research Ethics Governance

This panel session will discuss the challenges of applying the narrow conception of research ethics, which traditionally applies to human subject research, to climate change health research and will consider the ways in which research ethics governance needs to change. Tony Capon will speak to the philosophical and conceptual issues arising when research ethics is applied to climate change health research. Ana Palmero will speak to the practical implications of the narrow conception, drawing on her experience of reviewing climate change health research applications as a member of the secretariat of WHO’s research ethics committee. Finally, Carleigh Krubiner will reflect on how to distribute different types of responsibilities appropriately across the research ecosystem. Who - and which organisations - should be thinking about planetary health and ensuring these considerations are part of the research ethics governance framework?
