Ignacio Mastroleo
Dr Ignacio Mastroleo works in bioethics, biomedical research ethics, research integrity, and ethics of the use of experimental interventions outside of research (e.g. “compassionate use”, “emergency use authorization”). He is a researcher at the National Council for Scientific Research (CONICET) of Argentina and at the Bioethics Program of FLACSO Argentina, a collaborating center of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the World Health Organization (WHO). From 2020 to 2022, he was a member of the WHO Working Group on Ethics and COVID-19, and is the lead writer of the latest revision of the WHO ethical guidelines on the emergency use of unproven interventions outside the research setting (MEURI ethical framework) published in 2022, which replace the “compassionate use” ethical framework during public health emergencies. Dr. Mastroleo also works on other relevant research topics: the ethics of the emergency use of experimental vaccines and the ethics and governance of solar geoengineering research and its potential impact on global health.
